About Durgapur

Durgapur is wedged between the flood plains and highlands, creating a swampy grassland with springs and marshes in the northern reaches of the shoreline areas down south. The mud and earth form layers with improved fertility and muck suited for common paddy cultivation during the Rabbi season as a result of high rainfall in the autumn. Durgapur, known as the Steel Capital of East India, is the epitome of a traditional Bengali town located in West Bengal about 170 kms from the city of Kolkota. With a population of less than half a million, Durgapur is a place with the right mix of a big city’s hustle and bustle and the beauty of a quaint town. Temples, old-world marketplaces, parks, and even a barrage dot the landscape. This industrial town has much more to offer than just traditional food and a few tourist attractions. Durgapur is the place to go if you want to experience a real Indian vacation.

Places to Visit in Durgapur

Durgapur is a city in India that was designed by two American architects. Durgapur is a mineral-rich strip located in the West Bengal district of Bardhaman. The Durgapur Steel Plant is well-known in Durgapur. The Durgapur Barrage, which runs beside River Damodar, is one of the most exciting vistas along the river. Durgapur is also historically noteworthy, with Bhabani Pathak's Tilla making an appearance in the work of renowned Bengali author Bankimchandra Chatterjee. There is plenty to see in Durgapur.

Bhabani Pathak’s Tila

Bhabani Pathak was a famous dacoit in Bengal as well as the pioneer of the Sanyasi Movement. Folklore has it that he used to loot the wealthy and harsh and donate the riches to the impoverished. It is also believed this was the refuge or residence of the notorious dacoit. This was previously an underground subway connecting to the banks of the Damodar River but the government has since blocked it. This place has become a hot tourist attraction ever since the renowned Bengali author Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay mentioned this network of tunnels in his famous novels  'Devi Chaudhurani' and 'Durgesh Nandini'. The place is now a protected monument. Various historical inscriptions can be found on the rocks that surround the region. This well-preserved place is definitely not to be missed. There is also a tiny temple on the site, which is open all through the day and closed at night. The history lovers will find this place interesting.

Durgapur Barrage

The dam was created to regulate the flooding of the Damodar River during the monsoons, and it is one of the city's most popular landmarks. Durgapur and Bankura are also connected by the dam. This structure  stands at a height of 12 metres with 34 gates and controls the flow of the River Damodar, sometimes known as the 'Sorrow of Bengal.' Visitors that arrive at this location will be treated to a beautiful view of the structure and the adjacent bridge. The riverbank is tranquil and peaceful, with a little garden near the Durgapur end. People come for a picnic by the banks and a beautiful place for morning, evening walks.

Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) is located in West Bengal's Durgapur district. It is one of the Steel Authority of India's initiatives (SAIL). The plant's vast compound offers great exposure and an insight into the intricacies of steel manufacturing. The premises hold a number of large-scale operations and equipment, making it a terrific learning experience for newcomers and engineering students alike. However, you will have to make arrangements with one of the staff to visit this location as it's not otherwise not permitted for outsiders. Over time, the steel factory has made a significant contribution to India's steel sector and GDP growth. The steel plant's initial production capacity was 1 million tonnes of crude per year, later it grew  to 1.6 million tonnes during the 1990s. Post that period the goal of the plant became to enhance performance, efficiency and quality, conserve energy, lower production costs, and reduce pollution. Therefore, Durgapur steel factory used environmentally friendly methods to harmonise steel production with the ecosystem.

Deul Park

Deul Park is a delightful tiny village-like location beside the river Ajay in the Durgapur outskirts. The stream is well-fed and as gorgeous as its main parent stream of River Ganges. Deul Park, a village turned resort, is nestled gently along its side. It was once a sparsely forested woodland area rich with Ichai Ghosh's legacy and stories, but thanks to the Eco Resort, it is now a major tourist destination. Tourists can now come here and enjoy the tranquillity of the place and there are facilities of lodging, food and security as well. Deul is as beautiful as it is historically significant. If you are staying in the resort also go for a walk outdoors to absorb the beautiful scenery and breeze along the riverbank, and strike up a conversation with the locals to learn about popular folklore and other native traditions. Sometimes you may hear traditional singers humming the Bengali folk Baul song. The simplicity and charm of such places is always appealing, and Deul Park is a perfect example of that.

Troika Park

This park is also referred to as Anand Amusement Park and is positioned in Durgapur's city centre. This is yet another popular tourist destination to visit. With rides, water sports, and boating, the park provides a complete recreational time for the entire family. The place is flanked with well-known parks, churches, and cinema halls too. It serves a wide range of snacks and has a number of small food vendors both inside and outside the building. The park includes a few terrific thrill rides for tourists to enjoy. It contains a toy railway, ropeway, carriage rides, and boating facilities, which is one of the reasons why families, especially children, flock to it. It also features a small water park that offers colourful water slides and pools that are absolute fun.

Kumarmangalam Park

The park, which has musical fountains and boating facilities, is one of the largest in the region. The park has two openings and is located on Tilok Road in Durgapur.

A massive bronze Ganesha idol greets you on one side, while stunning figurines of traditional Indian folk dancing grace the other. The park is dotted with a large number of trees and blossoming flowers that are a beautiful and refreshing sight for visitors.
